Which Icynene Models This Applies To

Icynene’s product line breaks into two families that matter for attics: the open-cell LD-C-50 series and the closed-cell H2Foam Lite line. The LD-C-50 runs about 0.5 pounds per cubic foot and expands roughly 100:1, which makes it forgiving on irregular framing but means it needs a minimum depth of 5.5 inches to hit R-38 in Pomona’s Climate Zone 10. H2Foam Lite is denser at 2.0 pcf, expands less aggressively, and gives you R-38 in about 5 inches, but it’s unforgiving on application temperature. Signs Your Icynene Attic Insulation Is Failing

• Shrinking or pulling away from rafters and top plates. Open-cell Icynene can lose 5-10% of its volume over the first two years as off-gassing completes. In Pomona’s dry inland heat, we’ve seen accelerated shrinkage in attics that vent poorly, leaving gaps at the edges where conditioned air escapes.
• Crumbly, powdery surface texture. UV degradation hits any foam left exposed. Icynene requires a thermal barrier coating or ignition barrier per California Title 24; if a previous installer skipped it or the coating deteriorated, the foam surface oxidizes and loses its R-value.

There’s a short list of what a homeowner can safely check: verify your attic hatch is weatherstripped, confirm bathroom exhaust fans actually vent outside and not into the attic, and look for obvious gaps around chimney chases or plumbing vents. What you cannot safely do is apply or remove spray foam yourself. The two-component chemicals require respirators with organic vapor cartridges, full skin coverage, and controlled ventilation. Off-ratio mixing produces isocyanate-rich foam that never cures properly and becomes a long-term respiratory hazard.
